JR Pass / Discount Train Reservations

JR Pass Basics

If you are planning a trip to Japan, you have probably heard of it at least once. But if you do not know exactly when and how to use it, keep in mind that your trip planning may be incomplete.

Especially if your trip includes long-distance travel between regions such as Tokyo–Osaka or Osaka–Fukuoka, you should compare whether the JR Pass is a better deal, or whether buying individual tickets is more reasonable.

To make the right choice, it is important to understand the JR Pass types, conditions, and prices accurately before you travel. 🔍

JR Pass Detailed Guide

1) What is the JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass)?

The “JR Pass” is a special ticket issued for foreign short-term visitors (Temporary Visitor) traveling in Japan.

It covers Shinkansen (some trains excluded), limited express trains, and local trains, and also includes JR-operated buses and ferries, so it can be used as a cost-effective travel pass for trips across Japan. 🚄⛴️

You must have a “Landing Permission” sticker like the one below in your passport to buy or exchange the JR Pass in Japan.

Landing Permission sticker
Landing Permission sticker issued at immigration

If you use an automated entry system such as the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP), you may not receive the sticker, so be sure to request it separately.

2) Who should use it?

The JR Pass is not necessary for every traveler in Japan.

For trips focused on short-distance travel, you may not need it, and buying regular tickets can be cheaper.

For example, if you plan to visit only Fukuoka and Osaka, a one-way Sanyo Shinkansen ticket may be enough and cheaper.

On the other hand, if your itinerary is 7 days or more and includes Fukuoka, and you travel both the North Kyushu area (Yufuin, Nagasaki, etc.) and Osaka, while stopping in cities such as Kitakyushu, Hiroshima, Kurashiki, and Himeji, the JR Pass may be a better value.

3) Pros and cons of the JR Pass

  • Pros

    • Unlimited rides on JR lines, including Shinkansen.
    • You can also use JR-operated buses and ferries.
    • Very useful for long itineraries or trips that include multiple cities.
  • Cons

    • The value decreased after the price increase in October 2023.
    • Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen are not included, and an extra fee applies if you use them.
    • Subways and non-JR private railways are not covered. (Some passes allow certain partner lines.)

Since prices increased by about 30% to 70% after October 2023, the JR Pass is less attractive than before.

However, depending on your route and total travel distance, the nationwide pass or a regional pass can still be a better deal. So, check the JR Pass types and conditions carefully before departure, and decide based on your itinerary.

4) JR Pass categories

In general, “JR Pass” usually means the JR Nationwide Pass that can be used across Japan. Passes that are limited to a specific region are shown with their exact pass name.

① JR Nationwide Pass

  • JR Pass 7-day (Ordinary / Green)
  • JR Pass 14-day (Ordinary / Green)
  • JR Pass 21-day (Ordinary / Green)
    • The Green Car is a premium class with more space and comfort than Ordinary.
    • There are also classes such as Gran Class and sleeper cars, but even with a JR Pass, additional fees apply.

② Regional passes

Japan has six JR passenger companies, and each company operates in different areas.

  • In TourCast as well, passes that can be used nationwide are shown as the “JR Nationwide Pass”, and regional passes are explained using their exact pass names.
  • For details on each regional pass, check the guidebook for that region.

You can buy a JR Pass on the official website, through authorized sellers such as travel agencies, or you can also buy it in Japan.

To buy on the official website, you need a member account and a credit card, and you can also reserve reserved seats online in advance.

  • Buy the pass for your intended start date (activation date).
  • Rail passes can be booked from 10:00 a.m. one month before the activation date.

However, the official site can feel difficult or complicated to register and purchase. If you do not need online seat reservations in advance, it is often easier to buy from a seller and then reserve seats at a ticket office or ticket machine after you arrive.

  • For popular trains (for example, sightseeing limited express trains or Shinkansen), advance reservation is often required.

So, let’s compare how reserved seat booking works when you buy from the official site versus a seller.

  • In Japan, a carry-on suitcase is commonly called a suitcase (スーツケース). 🎒

① Exchanging the pass

You must exchange the JR Pass for the physical pass after arriving in Japan.

  • You can pick it up before the start (activation) date, but you must collect it by the activation date at the latest
  • If you do not bring the credit card used for payment, pickup may be difficult
  • No reissue if the pass is lost

② Picking up or reserving reserved-seat tickets

If you reserved seats online, you can ask for the limited express/reserved-seat ticket together when you exchange the pass.

However, when you exchange at the airport, some counters can issue tickets only for same-day trains. In that case, you can use a reserved-seat ticket machine to issue your tickets.

If you have many trains to reserve, it is faster if you print the date, time, route, and train name in English and submit it at the JR counter.

  • Example: 2025.10.24 / TOKYO 13:03 - SHIN OSAKA 15:57 / HIKARI 513
  • Counter names vary by region (JR Ticket Office, JR East Information Center, etc.), and most stations have a Midori-no-Madoguchi (みどりの窓口) ticket office.

Reserved-seat rules (such as reservation limits) vary by pass, so it is best to check the conditions of your pass in advance.

5) Riding the train

① Passing through the ticket gate

Whether you use non-reserved or reserved seats, you can pass through by inserting the JR Pass into the dedicated gate slot.

How to use the JR Pass
Example of using the pass at the ticket gate

Just keep these two points in mind.

  • If you use a reserved seat, you must issue the reserved-seat/limited express ticket in advance.
  • At Shinkansen-only ticket gates, you must insert both the pass and the reserved-seat/limited express ticket together.
    • If you are unsure, insert only the pass first. If it does not work, show everything to station staff.

The most common way people lose the JR Pass is leaving it at the ticket gate.

Because it cannot be reissued, always check you have it. If you are worried, keep it in a neck case and pass through by showing it to station staff.

If you cannot find an automatic gate, you can still pass through by showing the pass to staff at a staffed gate.

How to use the JR Pass
Show it to station staff to pass through

② Boarding the train

After passing the gate, check the departure board for your platform number.

  • Non-reserved seat: Board a non-reserved car and sit in any available seat.
  • Reserved seat: Sit in the seat printed on your ticket, and show it with your pass when asked.

On board, staff may ask to see your passport, so it is best to carry your passport at all times.

6) Important notes ⚠️

  1. Conditions and coverage vary by pass, so you must buy only after confirming the exact conditions of the pass based on the information above.

  2. With the JR Pass, you cannot use Shinkansen Nozomi (のぞみ) or Mizuho (みずほ) trains. If you board them, an extra fee applies.
    Extra fee guide for Nozomi/Mizuho

    • Nozomi: Shinkansen that stops only at major stations on the Tokyo–Osaka–Hakata route
    • Mizuho: Shinkansen that stops only at major stations on the Shin-Osaka–Kagoshima-Chuo route
  3. JR Rail Passes are not reissued even if lost or stolen. Be very careful not to lose it.

  4. You must pick it up by the start (activation) date, and you cannot pick it up after the activation date.

  5. Rail passes must be used on consecutive calendar days from the activation date.

    • Example: If you activate a 3-day pass on October 10, you must use it consecutively until October 12.
    • The validity period is not extended even due to service suspension or delays.
  6. With the same passport details, you cannot buy and exchange overlapping JR passes (any type) for the same period.

  7. Only the named holder can use the rail pass, and it cannot be transferred or loaned to others.

Using Discount Train Reservations

Even for long-distance travel, the JR Pass is not always the best deal.
If you do not ride many trains, or if you use only a few specific segments, an individual ticket can be cheaper than the JR Pass.

In this case, you do not need to use a JR Pass. Instead, it may be more cost-effective to use platforms that offer discounts on individual train reservations. The three major services are below.

Like flights, train discounts depend on the booking timing and remaining seats.
For the best discount seats, it is recommended to book right away from 10:00 a.m. one month before departure.

  • For some products, Eki-Net and JR Kyushu accept advance requests from 1 month + 1 week before departure
  • In some periods, special deals of up to 50%–60% off may be available, so it is helpful to check in advance.

However, discount tickets have limited inventory, so booking may be difficult if seats are sold out or your travel date is close.
In that case, booking through an agency can be more convenient.

Seishun 18 Ticket (青春18きっぷ) Complete Guide

The Seishun 18 Ticket (青春18きっぷ) is a seasonal rail ticket sold by the JR Group. It is a low-cost travel pass that lets you ride JR local trains (rapid and local services) across Japan.

Although the name includes the number “18”, there are no age or nationality restrictions. Both foreign travelers and residents in Japan can buy and use it.

The exact origin of the name “Seishun 18” is not officially known. However, it is commonly believed to come from the reasons below.

The Seishun 18 Ticket is sold three times a year, during school holiday seasons, and it allows only local trains (no Shinkansen or limited express trains).

Before the revision, if you had enough time and stamina, you could travel long distances at a very low cost. Because of this, it was seen as a pass that works best during holiday periods and for travelers who can handle long travel times.

Because of these characteristics, the name likely includes “Seishun” (youth) to reflect the holiday-season image and the idea of a pass that assumes energy and stamina.

1. Summary of the latest changes

① Revised to 3-day / 5-day passes

The previous “5 uses in total” format ended, and from the winter season of 2024, it changed to a consecutive-day ticket.

  • 3 consecutive days: ¥10,000
  • 5 consecutive days: ¥12,050

Each ticket must be used on consecutive calendar days, and it offers better value on itineraries with long distances or heavy daily travel.

② One ticket per person

In the past, one ticket could be shared by multiple people. Now it is one person per ticket.

③ Automatic ticket gates supported

The Seishun 18 Ticket can now be inserted into automatic ticket gates, improving convenience.

2.Available routes & conditions

① Available

  • All JR local trains (rapid and local services)
  • Some JR-operated BRT routes
  • JR West Miyajima Ferry (connected segment)

※ On some routes, you can use non-reserved Green Car seats by paying an additional fee.

② Not available

  • Shinkansen
  • Limited express trains
  • Reserved seats and reserved Green Car seats

※ Some areas have limited exceptions, but the basic rule is not allowed.

3. Sales & validity periods

The Seishun 18 Ticket is sold only three times a year (spring, summer, winter). Below is the general schedule.

SeasonSales periodValid travel period
SpringLate Feb to late MarMar 1 to Apr 10
SummerEarly Jul to late AugJul 20 to Sep 10
WinterEarly Dec to late DecDec 10 to mid-Jan

※ Exact dates can vary each year, so you should check before use.

5. How to buy

You can buy the Seishun 18 Ticket at major JR stations at the Midori-no-Madoguchi (みどりの窓口) ticket office or at designated sellers.
Many small rural stations do not have a ticket office, so it is safer to buy it in advance at a major station in a large city.

6. Travel tips

① Long-distance budget travel

Good for long-distance trips mainly using local lines, such as parts of Sanyo/Sanin, Tohoku, and Hokkaido.

② Local travel focus

Since you cannot use Shinkansen, you can experience small towns, rural scenery, and everyday life around stations more deeply.

③ Best for consecutive travel days

Because you must use it on consecutive days, it works best when travel is concentrated. It may be inefficient for itineraries focused on rest.

6. Summary

The Seishun 18 Ticket is one of the cheapest options among Japan rail passes for long-distance travel.
It is a good choice for travelers with enough time, who want to enjoy the journey itself rather than speed.

Even using only local trains, you can experience many regions and landscapes across Japan, which is why the Seishun 18 Ticket is still an attractive way to travel by rail.```
