Essential Apps for Japan Travel

Introduction

This section introduces essential apps for Japan travel. You can also find region-specific recommendations in the recommended apps guide for each area.

Google Maps Is a Must in Japan

In Japan and most other countries, Google Maps is highly accurate and very useful, so Google Maps is a must-have.

  • It includes all key travel features such as route search, navigation, and restaurant search.
  • In the TourCast app, if you tap the “Location” button next to a place description, it opens in Google Maps so you can check the exact location.
  • If you save places you like using the Save (star) feature in Google Maps, you can find them easily during your trip.
  • If you are not used to Google Maps, it is best to practice in advance. This helps you avoid getting lost in unfamiliar areas.

Japan Travel App

The Japan Travel app offers more detailed settings and advanced filters than Google Maps, so it is very useful for finding public transport routes in Japan.

  • Search priorities: fastest / fewest transfers / least walking / lowest fare / eco-friendly route
  • Route display options: recommended routes, shortest distance, fewer stairs, avoid rain/snow, wheelchair accessible, and more
  • You can set preferred transport modes: flight / Shinkansen / limited express / subway / local & highway bus / taxi / ferry, etc.
  • You can set walking speed: 5 levels from very slow to very fast

A major advantage is that if you register a travel pass, the app can show whether the route is covered by your pass.

  • Example: If you register the Osaka Amazing Pass, routes that are covered will show “Osaka Amazing Pass” in the results.

You can see “Osaka Amazing Pass” shown in the search results.

1) Pros

  • For groups of 3–4 people, a taxi can sometimes be more cost-effective than the subway or bus. If you include “Taxi” in the transport options, you can choose routes more smartly.

2) Cons

  • Search support can be limited depending on the language. For example, it may work better to search for “Kiyomizu-dera” or “kiyomizudera”.

With this app, you can also check taxi fares for the route and highway tolls if you plan to drive a rental car.

This helps you decide whether you need an Expressway Pass for your rental car trip. For details, see “Common Part 2 – Rental Car Preparation”.

Translation Apps

Japan is known as a country where travel is relatively easy even if you do not speak Japanese. However, in situations like restaurant menus, transport guidance, and facility rules, you may need accurate information and careful understanding of details.

In these cases, a translation app is very useful.

1. iPhone Built-in Translate App

The iPhone built-in Translate app is stable in both accuracy and usability when you have an internet connection. It lets you use text, voice, and camera translation smoothly in one app.

  • Text input translation
  • Conversation mode (voice ↔ voice translation)
  • Camera translation (real-time screen recognition)
  • Good recognition for menus, signs, and notices

If you download language packs in advance, you can also use it even without internet, at a level that works well for real travel situations.

If you use the latest iPhone and the latest AirPods together, you can use a feature that lets you hear real-time translation directly in your ears, like an interpreter.

This can be very useful when talking with locals or ordering in shops during your Japan trip.

  • iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 or later installed
  • Latest AirPods models
    • AirPods Pro 3
    • AirPods Pro 2
    • AirPods 4 (noise-cancelling model)

2. Android + Google Translate App

On Android, there is no built-in translation app like on iPhone, so the common option is to install and use the Google Translate app.

Google Translate also supports offline translation if you download language packs, but some features are limited.

  • Text input translation
  • Copy & paste translation
  • Camera translation – not available offline
  • Conversation mode (voice recognition) – not available offline

In other words, in offline situations, it is best to expect that only typed text translation is realistically available.

3. Notes

  • On the latest Android devices, AI-based translation features may be integrated into the OS or provided as a manufacturer feature.
  • In 2026, Google Translate is expected to apply Gemini AI technology more fully, which may further improve translation accuracy and real-time interpreting quality.
    • If the Google Translate app on iOS is updated with Gemini AI, it may perform even better than the iPhone built-in Translate app.

As a result, language-related inconvenience during travel is likely to decrease over time.
