Smart Guide to Choosing Osaka Airports & Flights
Osaka has two main airports: Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Itami Airport (ITM, Osaka International Airport).
All international flights departing from Korea arrive at Kansai International Airport (KIX). If you use a domestic flight within Japan, you will arrive at either Kansai Airport or Itami Airport, which is closer to the city center.
If you plan to take a domestic flight in Japan, choosing an arrival flight to Itami Airport is more efficient for your route.
If you are flying home after finishing your Osaka trip, it is recommended to leave the city for the airport 3 to 3.5 hours before your departure time.
Also, people sometimes search only for “Osaka Airport” on the last day and accidentally go to Itami Airport, so it is important to check your departure airport carefully.

Most flights arrive at Terminal 1, but if you use Jeju Air or Peach Aviation, you may arrive at Terminal 2.
If you are not taking the limousine bus, you can ride the free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 and then take either the JR line or the Nankai line.
Shuttle bus stops & timetable1) Taking the Nankai (南海) Line 🚄
One of the most commonly used ways to get from Kansai Airport into Osaka. If your accommodation is near Namba, using the Airport Express or the Rapi:t Limited Express is convenient. The arrival station is Nankai Namba Station.
Kansai Airport ↔ Nankai Namba timetable① Local Train (普通)
- Stops at every station, so it takes a long time.
② Airport Express (Express)
- Takes about 44 minutes to Namba Station.
- A regular commuter-style train.
- IC transit cards accepted
③ Rapi:t Limited Express (Rapi:t)
- Takes about 38 minutes to Namba Station.
- A limited express train.
- If you board using an IC transit card, you must purchase a separate limited express ticket (520 yen). This fare is for the 4-seat-per-row Regular Seat.

©howto-osaka.com - The front design resembles Tetsujin 28-go, so it is sometimes called the “Tetsujin 28-go train,” and its round windows are distinctive. (If you know Tetsujin 28-go… that says something 😉)
- It is cheaper to buy in advance than on-site, and from the next day after purchase you can make a reservation by selecting the date and time.
2) Taking the JR Line 🚆
If your accommodation is closer to Osaka (Umeda) rather than Namba, it is usually more efficient to take JR directly to Osaka Station.
Osaka Station and Umeda Station are connected, and the JR stop is Osaka Station.
① JR Kanku Rapid (関空快速)
- A regular train usable with an IC transit card.
- About 53 minutes to JR Tennoji Station; fare 1,080 yen one-way
- About 1 hour 10 minutes to JR Osaka Station; fare 1,210 yen one-way
- You can go from the airport to Osaka Station without transfers, using only your IC transit card.
- Kanku Rapid and Kishuji Rapid appear the same on timetables, but they are actually the same train.
- When traveling from Osaka to the airport, the train splits into two at Hineno (日根野) Station, so be careful.
Cars 1–4 go to Kansai Airport (KIX), and cars 5–8 go to Wakayama, so to reach the airport, you must ride cars 1–4.
② Haruka Limited Express (HARUKA)
- Useful if you want to go directly to Osaka (Umeda) or Kyoto Station.
- The on-site fare is 3,640 yen one-way between Kansai Airport ↔ Kyoto, but with advance booking you can get a discount to 2,200 yen.
- If you are heading to Nara or Kobe, you need to transfer at Tennoji or Osaka Station, so the advantage is limited.
- After getting off the Haruka, you can transfer to JR local trains for free without exiting the ticket gates.
- For example, after arriving at Kyoto Station, you can continue to Saga-Arashiyama Station or JR Inari Station with the same Haruka ticket without exiting.
If you purchased the Haruka Limited Express as an exchange voucher, you must exchange it locally for a physical ticket before boarding. However, if you do not separately issue a reserved-seat ticket, you can only use unreserved seating.
To use reserved seats, after exchanging your voucher, you must issue an additional reserved-seat ticket.
If you purchased an E-ticket, you must complete the date, time, and seat assignment in advance via the JR West official website.
3) Limousine Bus 🚌
- About 50 minutes to Namba OCAT (Osaka City Air Terminal), 1,300 yen one-way
- About 65 minutes to Umeda (Osaka Station), 1,800 yen one-way
- If your hotel is near Umeda/Osaka Station, you can arrive directly without transfers
- Especially useful if you are going straight to Universal Studios Japan (USJ)
- Limousine buses departing from Kyoto require advance reservation
If you use the Nankai Airport Express or Rapi:t Limited Express, you typically get off at Nankai Namba Station, or transfer at Tengachaya Station to reach Nipponbashi. With lots of luggage, this can feel a bit inconvenient.
On the other hand, the airport limousine toward Osaka Castle / Nipponbashi takes you directly to Doton Plaza Osaka, which is near Nipponbashi Station.
Because you can arrive in one ride without transfers, it is often the most comfortable option with less physical effort.
4) Taxi 🚖
Since the flat-rate airport taxi fare system ended on May 31, 2024, fares are now calculated by the meter, or you may need to agree on a price with the driver before boarding.
During daytime hours, taxis are rarely used by travelers, but if your flight arrives after the last public transport (usually before midnight), a taxi may be the only realistic option.
In that case, sharing a taxi with other travelers on site can help reduce costs. You can try casually suggesting a ride share to someone from the same flight.
(Note: some taxis may refuse if they cannot fit 4 passengers plus 4 suitcases.)
5) Going Directly to Kobe ⛴️
If you plan to go straight to Kobe from Kansai Airport, going via central Osaka can take 2+ hours, so if you have light luggage and want time to explore Kobe, the Bay Shuttle high-speed ferry is recommended.
- Route: Kansai Airport Pier → Kobe Airport Terminal
- Travel time: about 31 minutes
- Fare: 1,880 yen one-way
- With the foreign visitor discount, it can be as low as 500 yen one-way
- Children pay half fare
- Since boats are affected by weather, be sure to check operation status on the official website on the day of travel, and it is smart to prepare an alternative route as well.
