Okinawa Itinerary Planning Guide

When planning an Okinawa trip, the first decision is usually a rental car. More than just “rent or not,” it is important to decide exactly which days you will rent it.

Before booking, make sure you fully read the “Common - Rental Car” section for how to reserve, traffic rules, and key safety tips.

1) If you rent a car

If your first-night hotel is around American Village or the Onna resort area, it is most efficient to rent a car right after arriving at the airport.

Some hotels near American Village and a few resort hotels offer rental cars, but foreign-language support may be limited and information can be unclear. For most travelers, it is safer to use a rental car office near the airport.

On the other hand, if you stay near Kokusai-dori, you can move easily by Yui Rail or bus, so you can skip renting on the arrival day and start from the next day.

In short, clearly deciding your rental start and end dates is the first step in preparing your Okinawa trip.

Plan to finish your rental car return at least 3–4 hours before your departure flight on the last day.

2) If you do not rent a car

If you do not rent a car, you will usually choose a bus tour.

Bus tours are typically divided into Northern and Southern routes. Even joining for one day each can cover most major sights.

  • Northern bus tour
    • Pick-up/drop-off near the Prefectural Office area or American Village
    • Often includes Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island, Manzamo, and more
  • Southern bus tour
    • Departs near the Prefectural Office area
    • Often includes Nirai Kanai Bridge, Okinawa World, Umikaji Terrace, and more

If you prefer a private experience rather than group travel, there are also services where a local guide drives a rental vehicle with you.

  • Private vehicle with a guide
    • Hotel pick-up included
    • Around 70,000 KRW per person (guide fee included)
    • Vehicle rental fee is separate

Bus tours are convenient, but they come with fixed schedules and limited flexibility. If that feels stressful, you can use public transport instead.

However, you must plan carefully around long bus intervals and the last bus time.

In the “Transport System and Transport Passes” section, make sure you check how to ride each bus company’s buses before your trip.

3) Decide what to visit

Use the South / Central / North area guides to choose your destinations.

In Japan, admission fees can be expensive, so buying a pass in advance can help you save money.

Admission fee saving tip

Even with only major attractions, admission fees can easily exceed 6,800 yen. (About 65,000 KRW)

With the Okinawa Joy Pass or Okinawa Fun Pass, you can save about 20,000–30,000 KRW per person.

  1. Joy Pass
    • Choose 3 attractions from 4 major facilities
    • Valid for 7 days from the first use
    • Before use, check the official website
  1. Fun Pass
    • Different plans, including a value plan and a Churaumi-included plan
    • Valid for 5 days from the first day of use after app registration
    • View the full attraction list

If you visit Okinawa when renting a car is not possible, you may need to rely on public transport.

You can also consider bus tours, but if your hotel is in the north (Onna resort area, etc.), it can be difficult to join a northern bus tour because many tours start from the south, and it can be hard to reach the meeting point early in the morning by public transport.

Public transport in Okinawa can feel inconvenient, but with the “Transport System and Transport Passes” section and the itinerary below, it is still possible to travel using only public transport.
