How to Build Your Itinerary Easily

Introduction

If you have already booked your flights and hotel for your Kyushu trip, the next step is to build your travel itinerary.

However, when you start planning, the biggest question is often 'So what should I take, and how do I move around?'.

Even if you know that the Sanko Pass is for buses and the Rail Pass is for trains, it can still feel confusing to decide which transport to use and how to design your route.

To solve this problem, 'TourCast' introduces 'How to Build Your Itinerary Easily'.

  • Remember that travel is about seeing, feeling, eating, and enjoying as much as possible within a limited time.
  • It is not realistic to visit every place perfectly within a fixed schedule. When you accept this, you can enjoy a more relaxed and richer journey.

The 4-step method to complete your Kyushu itinerary

Among Japan’s many regions, Kyushu is one of the most difficult areas to plan.

This is because from Fukuoka, most major sightseeing spots are about two hours or more one way, the choice of transport passes and travel methods is complex, and each area has a different travel style.

Despite this, most blogs, YouTube videos, and guidebooks only show 'sample itineraries', and rarely explain how to build your own schedule.

To reduce this difficulty, TourCast provides a 4-step guide that helps you plan your own trip.

Now, let’s look at a step-by-step method to easily build a Northern Kyushu itinerary, which is hard to find elsewhere. ✨

Exclusive TourCast Tips!

Four steps to plan your Kyushu trip

  • Step 1: Choose travel areas based on your trip length
  • Step 2: Decide whether to stay overnight in each area
  • Step 3: Select the best transport pass for your route
  • Step 4: Build a detailed daily schedule based on transport and travel flow

Let’s look at a real example.

A 3-night, 4-day Kyushu trip — like this!

1) Trip length / travel areas

  • 3 nights, 4 days
  • Main destinations: Yufuin, Huis Ten Bosch, Kumamoto

2) Where to stay

  • 2 nights in Fukuoka
  • 1 night at a Yufuin ryokan

3) Transport pass selection

  • All destinations are accessible with the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and the Sanko Pass
  • Especially on the Kumamoto ↔ Hakata route, the Shinkansen takes about 33 minutes, and
the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass, which includes the Yufuin no Mori sightseeing train, is the most efficient option

4) Detailed itinerary

  • Day 1: Fukuoka → Shinkansen → Kumamoto (about 33 minutes)
Visit Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Garden → return to Fukuoka for the night
  • Day 2: Day trip to Huis Ten Bosch → overnight in Fukuoka
  • Day 3: Ride the Yufuin no Mori limited express → travel to Yufuin and explore → stay at a Yufuin ryokan
  • Day 4: Yufuin → Fukuoka → city sightseeing → transfer to the airport

The Northern Kyushu Rail Pass costs 15,000 yen for 3 days / 17,000 yen for 5 days, so for only 2,000 yen more, you get 2 extra days of use.

Just the Yufuin ↔ Fukuoka route alone costs about 5,000 yen one way by train, or 3,250 yen one way by bus, so the 5-day Northern Kyushu Rail Pass is the better value.

You can also consider departing from Oita Airport on the last day, since it is close to Yufuin. However, flights from Oita Airport are limited, so you must check schedules in advance.

A 2-night, 3-day Kyushu trip? It depends on where you stay

Now let’s compare a 2-night, 3-day itinerary with the same sightseeing areas, but with different accommodation choices.

1) Staying 2 nights in Fukuoka

① Trip length / travel areas

  • 2 nights, 3 days / Fukuoka, Yufuin, Beppu, Kumamoto

② Where to stay

  • 2 nights in Fukuoka

③ Transport pass selection

  • Since Kumamoto is about 2 hours 20 minutes by bus, it is more efficient to use the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and take the Shinkansen

④ Detailed itinerary

  • Day 1: Fukuoka → Shinkansen → Kumamoto (about 33 minutes)
Visit Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Garden → return to Fukuoka for the night
  • Day 2: Morning Beppu onsen tour → afternoon Yufuin sightseeing → overnight in Fukuoka
  • Day 3: Fukuoka city sightseeing → transfer to the airport

Day 2 can be a tight schedule, but if you focus only on the main onsen spots in Beppu, it is still a realistic route.

2) Staying overnight in travel areas

① Trip length / travel areas

  • 2 nights, 3 days / Fukuoka, Yufuin, Beppu, Kumamoto

② Where to stay

  • 1 night in Beppu and 1 night in Kumamoto, staying in travel areas

③ Transport pass selection

  • The Kyushu Cross-Island Train does not pass through Yufuin, so it cannot be used
  • The Kyushu Cross-Island Bus connects Beppu → Yufuin → Kumamoto, so the Sanko Pass is the better choice

④ Detailed itinerary

  • Day 1: Fukuoka → Beppu, sightseeing and overnight
  • Day 2: Kyushu Cross-Island Bus → Yufuin sightseeing → Kumamoto, overnight
  • Day 3: Kumamoto sightseeing → return to Fukuoka → airport transfer

Staying two nights in Fukuoka is more convenient because you do not need to move your luggage, but staying overnight in travel areas gives you more relaxed time each day.

By understanding these examples, you will clearly see how to use the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and the Sanko Pass, which makes
Step 3 (pass selection) and Step 4 (detailed planning) much easier.

In the next guide, we will clearly explain the main transport passes for Fukuoka and Northern Kyushu.
