2) Pass Types and Prices

  • Northern Kyushu Rail Pass: 3-Day 15,000 JPY / 5-Day 17,000 JPY
  • All Kyushu Rail Pass: 3-Day 22,000 JPY / 5-Day 24,000 JPY / 7-Day 26,000 JPY
  • Southern Kyushu Rail Pass: 3-Day 12,000 JPY
  • Children aged 6–11 receive a 50% discount on the adult fare.

3) Key Features

  • Usage: You can use both reserved and non-reserved seats on JR trains within the covered area.
  • Shinkansen Access: The pass covers certain Shinkansen sections, such as Hakata–Kumamoto and Takeo-Onsen–Nagasaki.
  • Non-Reserved Seats: You can board non-reserved cars on Shinkansen and Limited Express trains immediately without a booking, offering great schedule flexibility.
  • Important Note: The Sanyo Shinkansen (Hakata–Kokura section) is NOT covered by this pass.

4) Travel Tips and Precautions

  • Carry Your Passport: You must carry your passport at all times, as conductors may ask to see it.
  • Seat Reservations: Online booking is available, but a reservation fee (1,000–1,500 JPY) applies per seat.
  • Booking Limits: All Kyushu passes allow unlimited reservations, while Northern/Southern Kyushu passes are limited to 6 reservations. You must purchase a separate limited express ticket if you exceed this limit.
  • Exchange Locations: You can exchange your voucher only at JR Midori no Madoguchi (Ticket Office). At Hakata Station, look for the Rail Pass Counter opposite the Tourist Information Center.

Check Non-Covered Areas!

  • Shimonoseki Station is not a valid exchange point. Please exchange your voucher at nearby stations like Kokura or Mojiko.
  • Kurokawa Onsen is not accessible by train. The rail pass does not cover bus travel; please check bus schedules separately.

💡 TourCast Tip

Tourist trains like the "Yufuin no Mori" sell out quickly and are hard to book on the day of travel. If you want to ride it, we highly recommend booking online one month in advance, even if it means paying the additional reservation fee. If you plan to take three or more limited express trains, the rail pass is much more economical!

Exclusive TourCast Tips!

Pick up your pass at the airport and start your trip immediately!

As of December 3, 2024, there is a dedicated JR Kyushu Rail Pass exchange counter on the 1st floor of the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, making your start much faster. You can now receive your physical pass at the airport instead of traveling to Hakata Station.

  • Exchange Only: This counter only handles voucher exchanges. (New purchases and specific seat reservations are not available here.)

Checking Train Timetables in English (or Chinese)Easy train search tips for beginners

The key to a successful rail pass trip is checking timetables in advance. This helps you plan your itinerary efficiently and prepare for seat reservations.

Note that the English (or Chinese) website displays regular ticket fares. Depending on the situation, the online discount tickets (like Kyushu Net Kippu) available on the Japanese website may be cheaper than using your rail pass.

  • Example (Hakata - Beppu section):
    • Regular Limited Express Sonic Fare: 6,910 JPY one way
    • Online Discount Ticket (Kyushu Net Kippu): 3,500 JPY one way / 2,950 JPY if booked 3 days in advance
    • Conclusion: For a round trip, combining discount tickets might be cheaper than a 3-day rail pass (15,000 JPY). Check your overall travel route for the best value.

How to Read Search Results

When searching for the Hakata - Beppu section, if you select the "Use Shinkansen" option, the results may include the Hakata–Kokura section, which is not covered by the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. Be sure to uncheck "Use Shinkansen" when searching.

  • Train Details: Check departure/arrival times, train names (e.g., Sonic), and travel time.
  • Seat Availability:
    • ○ (Available): Plenty of seats/non-reserved space.
    • △ (Limited): Reservations are filling up.
    • ✕ (Sold Out): No seats left (Reserved/Green car).

💡 TourCast Tip

Online discount tickets are often only available on the Japanese website. Use the English (or Chinese) page for planning, and if you want to book at the cheapest rates, follow our 'How to book on the Japanese website' section below. Once you master it, you can become a pro at saving on transportation costs!

3 Ways to Reserve Reserved Seats with the Rail PassComparison of counter, machine, and online booking

Reserving seats is essential when using the JR Kyushu Rail Pass, especially for popular trains.

1) Request at the Midori no Madoguchi (Ticket Office)

The Midori no Madoguchi is the place to go for all reserved seat requests.

  • Application Form: Printing and filling out the Reserved Seat Application Form (PDF) in advance makes communication much easier.
  • Note: You must exchange your voucher for the physical pass first. If the office is busy, they may only accept reservations for same-day trains, so arrive with extra time.
Reserved seat ticketing
Using the seat reservation form

2) Automatic Ticket Vending Machines

If you have your physical pass, you can book directly at the green automatic ticket machines in stations.

  • Caution!: Do not select the "Reserved Seat Ticket" button, as that charges a full fare. Always look for the button labeled "Reserve a reserved seat using a rail pass/ticket".
  • Process: Insert your rail pass, then input your route, train, and time to select your seat.
  • After Ticketing: You must carry both your issued reserved seat ticket and the rail pass together at all times.

3) Online Reserved Seat Booking

For popular trains like the "Yufuin no Mori," online booking is highly recommended.

  • Cost: There is an additional fee of 1,000–1,500 JPY per seat (500 JPY+ for children).
  • Required Items: When picking up tickets, you must present the physical credit card used for booking and your passport. (Mobile cards are not accepted!)
  • Advantage: Online bookings do not count towards the rail pass's reservation limit (6 times).

4) Changing or Canceling Reservations

  • Limits: Northern/Southern Kyushu passes are limited to 6 reservations.
  • Changes/Cancellations:
    • Request changes for counter bookings at the Midori no Madoguchi.
    • Online bookings can be modified or canceled directly on the website.
    • Fees apply for online reservation cancellations. Please cancel if you don't plan to use the train to leave the seat for others.

Important Online Booking Note!

You must pay with a physical credit card in your name. Many travelers face issues when trying to pick up tickets using a family member or friend's card. Always use the same card from booking through pickup.

Rail Pass vs. Online Discount Tickets: Which is Better?Choose the most cost-effective option for your itinerary

Don't assume the rail pass is always the best choice. If your itinerary is simple, online discount tickets (like Kyushu Net Kippu) are often more economical.

1) Key Points for Discount Tickets

  • No Stopovers: Discount tickets become invalid if you leave the ticket gates midway through a journey.
  • Reserved Seating Included: Buying a reserved seat online with these tickets secures your seat without extra procedures or fees.

2) Cost Comparison Example (Hakata ↔ Yufuin)

Assuming a 3-day trip just to Yufuin:

TypeRegular Fare (Reserved)Kyushu Net Kippu (Discount)
Yufuin no Mori6,130 JPY5,600 JPY
Limited Express Yufu5,630 JPY5,100 JPY
  • Round-trip Total: 11,200 JPY (based on Yufuin no Mori)
  • Conclusion: It is approx. 3,800 JPY cheaper than the 3-day Northern Kyushu Rail Pass (15,000 JPY) and incurs no seat reservation fees.

3) Smart Booking Tips

  • QR Ticketless: Skip paper tickets; use the QR code on your smartphone to pass through ticket gates.
  • Membership Levels: Discounts for "JQ Card" or "Jipang" members are for residents of Japan; regular travelers should not select these.
  • Decision Criteria: Combine discount tickets if visiting 1–2 areas, and choose a rail pass if moving between 3 or more areas.

Yufuin no Mori Booking War!

Tickets for the popular "Yufuin no Mori" go on sale one month in advance and sell out instantly. Pro tip: Use the "Advance Booking (Waitlist)" feature, which starts 1 month + 7 days before the travel date to secure your seat as soon as it opens!

Booking Online with the Japanese Website for DiscountsHow to master the Japanese site for better savings

To get deep discounts without a rail pass, you need to use the Japanese reservation site, as the English site does not list all "Kyushu Net Kippu" deals. Use your browser's automatic translation function to follow these steps:

1) Registration and Credit Card

  • Registration: Register on the JR Kyushu Train Reservation Site. You can use your accommodation address to register as a foreign resident.
  • Important: Click the email authentication link with translation turned off to avoid errors.
  • Card Registration: Register your physical credit card for payment.
    • ⚠️ Note: Mobile/e-payments cannot be used for station pickup. You must pay with a physical credit card and carry that card when you travel to pick up your tickets.

2) Search Tips

  • Language Settings: To ensure accuracy, turn off auto-translate and enter station names in Japanese (Kanji/Hiragana).
  • Search Filters:
    • Check "Use Limited Express/Express (特急・急行を使う)".
    • Use "Non-stop (乗換えなし)" to find direct trains.

3) Types of Discount Tickets

Remember, the higher the discount, the stricter the conditions.

  • Regular Tickets: Can be changed/canceled but at regular prices.
  • Net Toku/Early Bird (Hayatoku): Up to 50–60% off when bought 3–7 days in advance, but often valid only for that specific train and cannot be changed.
  • Ticketless: These are the most convenient as they allow boarding with a QR code and require no station pickup.

4) Picking Up Tickets at the Station (for Regular Fares)

If you didn't choose the QR code option, you must pick up tickets at a "Reserved Seat Vending Machine" in the station. Since the machine only supports Japanese, remember these steps:

  1. Select '予約したきっぷのお受取り' (Pick up reserved tickets).
  2. Select 'JR九州列車予約サービス' (JR Kyushu Train Reservation Service).
  3. Insert the physical credit card used for payment.
  4. Enter the last 4 digits of the phone number you registered to issue the tickets.

Credit Card Note!

If you lose the card you paid with or if the card number changes, there is no way to pick up the tickets. In that case, you must cancel the booking (fee applies) and re-book, so please keep your card safe!

💡 TourCast Tip

If the Japanese site is intimidating, check the schedule on the English site first and note down the train number. Then, compare the train time and number on the Japanese site to minimize mistakes. Use the money you saved on transportation to enjoy more delicious Kyushu food!

Ticketless Service: Board directly with a QR code

Thanks to the Ticketless Service introduced on September 26, 2024, you no longer need to queue at the station to exchange tickets when using online discount tickets. Simply scan the QR code on your smartphone at the ticket gate to board.

It's simple: Log in to the JR Kyushu reservation page on your smartphone, tap Reservation Confirmation (予約確認)Display QR (QRを表示), and scan the screen at the gate!

  • Note: The official JR Kyushu app may be difficult to download with an overseas account, so we recommend using a mobile web browser.

💡 TourCast Tip
QR boarding is convenient, but it can be difficult if your phone battery dies or you lose your internet connection at the station. Be sure to carry a portable charger and check your ticket before arriving at the gate.

The Economical '2-Ticket' Nimai KippuA smart budget strategy for buying tickets on the spot

Nimai Kippu (2-ticket set) is a discount package of two tickets for the same route. One person can use it for a round trip, or two people can each use one for a one-way trip. It is very useful when online booking is a hassle or if you prefer flexibility during your trip.

1) Nimai Kippu Price and Structure

The seat class (Reserved/Non-reserved) varies by route. (Price shown is for 2 adults or one round trip.)

2) How to Buy and Use

  • Where to Buy: Automatic ticket machines or counters at major JR Kyushu stations.
  • Pro Tip: Set the machine language to "Japanese" to see the menu for 2枚きっぷ (2-ticket set). It is not visible in English/Chinese menus.
  • Buying at the Counter: If your Japanese is limited, write down: "OO駅まで2枚きっぷお願いします" (Please give me a Nimai Kippu to OO Station) and show it to the staff.
  • Reserved Seating: If you bought a Nimai Kippu for reserved seats, you must use the automatic ticket machine to reserve your seats. (If you don't, you will be seated in the non-reserved cars.)

3) Important Precautions

  • Validity: Use within 1 month of purchase.
  • Stopovers: The ticket becomes invalid as soon as you exit the ticket gates.
  • Train Types: Shinkansen is not included; it only applies to limited express and below.
  • If You Miss Your Train: If you miss your reserved train, you can still board the non-reserved cars of other trains on the same route on the same day.

💡 TourCast Tip

Nimai Kippu is your best savior when you miss an online booking or decide to take a spontaneous side trip. If your schedule isn't too tight, buying a Nimai Kippu on the spot is much less stressful than complicated online discount tickets!

The Kyushu Crossing Limited Express connecting Kumamoto and BeppuA scenic route covered by the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass

Kyushu Odan Tokkyu (Kyushu Crossing Limited Express)

The Kyushu Odan Tokkyu crosses the heart of Kyushu from Kumamoto through Aso to Oita and Beppu. It runs twice daily from Kumamoto and Beppu and is fully covered by the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass.

  • Seating: Operates with 1 reserved-seat car and 1 non-reserved car.

1) Train vs. Bus: Which to choose?

For major tourist spots along the route (like Kurokawa Onsen), buses can be more efficient than trains.

  • Kurokawa Onsen: There is no train station here. If this is your destination, a bus trip using the SunQ Pass is much more economical than a rail pass.
  • Aso Sightseeing: You can reach Aso Station by train, but the bus fare to the volcano crater terminal (1,000 JPY one way) adds up.

2) Strategy

  • Shinkansen Connection: Use your rail pass to quickly reach Kumamoto via Shinkansen, then transfer to the Kyushu Odan Tokkyu toward Aso, Oita, or Beppu to optimize your time.
  • Access to Yufuin: Yufuin is accessible via a transfer at Kurume Station.

💡 TourCast Tip

The Kyushu Odan Tokkyu offers stunning views of Mt. Aso. To enjoy the romance of the train trip, reserve a window seat. However, if your main plan is Kurokawa Onsen, don't hesitate to buy the SunQ Pass—it’s better for both your sanity and your wallet!

The Rail Pass isn't the only option. We’ve summarized cost-effective tickets based on your travel style and pace.

The most common mistake is thinking the most expensive pass offers the most benefits.

  • If speed and convenience are priorities: JR Kyushu Rail Pass
  • If budget and small-town travel are your focus: Tabi-Meijin Ticket
  • If you want a balanced combination: Gurutto Kyushu Kippu Set your criteria, calculate the rough cost with Google Maps, and then decide!
